And I miss it, mostly when I wan´t to reproduce something I´ve knitted, and since I rarely follow a patten I find it nice to have all written down. Contemplating if I should keep this blog, or just document better on Ravelry.

Here are some phone pictures of my latest knit, zipped cardigan for my almost 5 year old.
We temporarily moved in with my in-laws from end of october until 13th of desember.

In that time I have finished my blue sand cardigan, that I started in March 2014, I got money for my birthday from my in-laws and I bought yarn. Albulita, so soft and I had high hopes for the yarn. It does knit nicely and it is nice the garment, but there is a big BUT, it has a lot of lints... but I haven´t shaved it yet, so that might help?

I haven´t been able to take pictures of it, but here are some pictures I found on my phone, that represent my last few months.

We had to rennovate the bathroom, it was in bad state (tiles falling off and etc), my dad tiled the bathroom for us, he took of time from work, it was a major work and I couldn´t be happier with his work/help.
There must be something wrong with my comment sections, I haven´t been able to respond to Heidi at Wool rocks, I called the Fana sweater I´m working on the danish island Fanø. Thank you Heidi for pointing that out to me :)Bryndishttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00020961671933621889noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-462336249007233578.post-10072528097582368332014-08-25T18:59:00.002+00:002014-08-25T18:59:28.080+00:00Summer loveThe summer went by to fast, I however knitted a lot (frogged a lot)
The blue sand cardigan has half of arms, inside of pockets is also missing, and the edging. This is probably at least one weeks worth of evening knitting in fromt of the TV.
I therefore had no choice but to knit another one, it also had to be marked with S as the previous one, but the mouse was forgotten luckily. I took the pictures at the place where it will be used, kindergarten.
And now I have only one neck warmer to go, since my younger daughter will also need one.
I have never made a guide on where to buy yarn when in Iceland (or should I say Reykjavik and surrounding area), so here are a few tips. Organized by Location:

Hafnarfjörður:

Yarn for my next project, bought with money my inlaws gave me for my birthday, intended in a cardigan for me, but very tempting to make cardigans for both of my girls.

If you are in need of Abuelita, Madelinetosh, Cascade, Randalína (I tink it is Evilla/Kauni from Estonia or something similar). Handprjón.is , is in my beautiful hometown of Hafnarfjörður, only 10km from Reykjavík city center. The crazy thing about this store is that it also sells showers (yeas you read right, shower/yarn store, it used to be part yarn mostly showers but now it has turned around, yarn is taking over the store and the showers are in the back) If you visit Hafnarfjörður I would Recommend to go to one of the Swimming pools there (Suðurbæjarlaug (outdoor) or Ásvallalaug (indoor) and then take a stroll in the town center with your newly bought yarn and get some Ice cream, and/or to Súffisstin (coffe shop), or a bakery where you could relax eat something delicious and knit with the new yarn. Hellisgerði is one of my favourite places for a picnic, my grandmother used to live right across from it so I spent countless hours there playing as a kid.

Another store in Hafnarfjörður (well should I say supermarket corner) is Rokka. I know as a knitter you should support yarn stores and not big supermarket chains, but this store is not like any other supermarkets. This store is not a chain, it is a family owned and they only own this one store. They have a big selection of Istex (Icelandic wool), all colors available and they have a big selection of Sandnes .They also carry a more modest selection of other yarn brands ; Navia, Hjertegarn, Rauma, Lotus Yarn.

If you are looking for something fresh, Litla Prjónabúðin is your place (if a yarn store could be a hipster this would be one). They sell Pom Pom magasin, several danish and organic yarns . The owner is active on Facebook, and you can browse for pictures of the yarn that the store carries, which includes Geilsk, Dieforyarn, Strikkebogen, Shibui baby alpacca, Askeladen, BC-garn, Juno, Istex.

If you need Debbie Bliss, Noro, Zauerball, Schoppel Wolle, Brooklyn tweed, Istex. Storkurinn is your place, right in Reykjavik city center on Laugavegur. They have a big selection and are worth the stop.

Erla, carries drops, and has a big selection of needlework. Love the traditional Icelandic needlework kits. Facebook page link

Amma mús (grandma mouse) carries Isager,Rauma, design.club.dk yarns, and if you are into needlework this is your place to be. They aren´t exactly hip at this store, but they do carry lovely yarns. The store can be found in two places both on Laugavegur (city center) and Ármúli. I however haven´t been in the store in the city center so maybe that store is more current?

Garnbúðin Gauja, this is my mother-in laws favourite store. They sell lang yarns, Filcolana, Katia, Rasmilla, Istex *update - this store is only a web-shop now*

Handprjónasambandið. Icelandic wool and handknitted Icelandic wool sweaters.

National museum of Iceland, is not a yarn store, but they do have a lovely gift shop that sells some yarn kits with tradional icelandic patterns. You don´t have to go into the museum to enjoy the coffee shop and the gift shop.

Kópavogur

Rósa Amma (grandma Rósa), is a store that I have never been to it is rather new. I will maybe go this summer, when whether is nice and I need a long walk. But in my defence I´ve been running several times past this store (not like I can stop by all sweaty in my running clothes, and asking my running buddies to wait while I go yarn petting). This store carries Mayflower, yarn for knitting machines, unspun finish yarn (color changing yarn)

Föndra, carries drops and phildar. I however never seem to find the colors I want there, but they also sell fabric and other craft things. This store is very close to my home, only 5 min walk, so I often drop there by, but rarely buy anything.

Hannyrðaverslunin Mólý, didn´t find a website or active facebook page and I really can´t remember all the yarns they sell, but I think it is Navia, Sandnes and Istex.

* I may not have listed all the yarns the stores sell, I only listed what I found interesting. The opening hours below might also be subjected to change so please check before you make a trip on the facebook pages of the stores. This post is also long enough , so I will just have to make another post at one point for tips for yarn worthy stops in another parts of the country.

Mosfellsbær:

Álafoss Factory store. Any serious yarn loving tourist would make the trip out there. Beautiful surroundings, rich history, coffe shop, and last but not least the full range of Istex yarns, and also a big selection of already knitted souvenirs.

Here are some of the ideas I gave her, we however have very different taste so I´m not sure she will knit any of them. But these are patterns that I could see myself knit, or at least some version of them.
I tried my hand at this pattern again, and used fewer stitches, a lot fewer 108 stitches. But should have made it rather 96 stitches, since it grew alot with wear. Yarn from my winter sweater ( Sandnes Silk Mohair, and Einband from Istex)

I´m still working on my Camomille shawl, I don´t have much time to knit so it grows slowly but I can´t wait for it to be finished so I can start wearing it.

I finally finished it yesterday, but the weather was not really in the same birthday mood as I was, so these pictures will have to do.

There is no pattern, just a simple raglan sweater, made from Mohair silk from Sandnes, and Einband. These two make a lovely combination.

apart from the weather I got some really nice birthday presents, like the Sjónabók (700 pages of patterns and ornamets from Iceland, these charts are from the 17th, 18th and the 19th century).

And I also got another pattern book, this one is from Faroe Islands, and a bit different than the Icelandic book, more graphic and simple patterns, but some are similar, but the Faroe island patterns are more simple.
I love both my new books, and I already have a lot of ideas, but this 24 hours a day thing is not working in my favor right now.Bryndishttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00020961671933621889noreply@blogger.com4tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-462336249007233578.post-6072128434957641972014-02-12T20:47:00.002+00:002014-02-12T20:47:36.677+00:00My knitting cornerAfter seeing Meretes knitting corner, and her knitting mess, I was relieved to see that there are others that are slowly taking over the living room with yarn and other knitting things.

I´m usually very organized person and like to keep my home minimalistic, but it is hard to keep organized when the yarn cant stop behaving like rabbits and multiplying exponentially. One of the turkish blue boxes is intended to keep current projects that I´m working on (when I´m not knitting), the other box is intended to keep all my needles and things like measuring tape and etc. The red bucket is intended as a yarn storage. In reality as you can see I have two bags with UFOs, I have knitting patterns in paper versions that need to be organized, I have some yarn laying around in the closet. And the white chest on the left, is not intended for my yarn, but houses a lot of leftovers and other things that are to be used in the near future (well or never). My number one accessory is however my wool blanket (the one with the horses), I seldom knit without it.

Below is a picture of my current project, that you can also see a bit further progressed on the sofa., Something for me finally on the needles:) Mixture of silk mohair and Einband, it is so soft, I can´t stop petting it.

In my defense, this time around the color was chosen by the recipient, my idea was gray, hers were brown, or this purple. I tried to get my way but was unsuccessful, she´s the most determined person I know. Her determination are one of the things that I love the most about her and also the thing that is most difficult to deal with in a 3 year old. Technically they are also not all purple, the pair for my younger daughter is pale pink.

The pants were knitted on 4mm needles with Smart yarn, bigger needles than recommended combined with my loose knitting resulted in a bit longer pants than intended. I knew that they would grow, just not how much. But since I knew that they would grow I made a long ribbing at the bottom, that would keep them up, and it worked perfectly, they are big but not that big that she can´t wear them.

They are big hit, and will probably be in use for a long time, just like the first version of this pattern. Which have been in use for the last 2 years.

Needles: 3mm and 4mm
yarn: Smart
Pattern: garnstudio

The modifications that I made this time around are, they are made because my daughter is slim and I´m using another yarn than the pattern is written for.

cast on: 6-9 months size (96 stitches),

Made 3x3 ribbing at the beginning

work the pattern until you get to the increases, then increase total of 12 times and end up with 120 stitches

made no decreases until the last round before I started the 3x3 ribbing at the bottom

made the leg and the ribbing longer than the pattern states (around 45 cm that grew to 50 cm

I think I will have to make another pair at somepoint in gray for my younger daughter who has no say in what colors she wears. She is though still wearing these pants, but they will be to small for next winter.

Both her grandmothers knitted sweaters for her first birthday.

The teal colored sweater fits her perfectly, and will be great when finished!

The white/brown sweater is exactly the same as was knitted for my older girl (same size even), and she´s been using it for 2 years, it is very thin but very warm at the same time (knitted from unspun wool), so I´m expecting this one to get a lot of use as well.

I just can´t seem to finish anything. I´m therefore confessing to my sins and setting a goal to finish at least the 1st thing on the list, because when I do, I will reward myself and go buy yarn for Camomille shawl for myself (but maybe I might buy the yarn anyway just to have it ready for when I need it...)

2. Squares for lily - love in the language of yarn I finished 2, I was however planning to use up a lot of scrap yarn and make a lot of squares, at work one of my colleagues has organized that the drug company that we work for will pay for the shipping fee, so all I have to do is knit and bring it to work. It will be sent by the end of january, so I must get started on that.

Grandma made this for my 3 year old

The pattern is from Sandnes and grandma made some alterations, she left out the pattern at the bottom. I like it much better this way I must say than the original. Grandma seems to have picked the colors from the pattern.

I got (was on my wishlist) from DH, a double pointed knit pro sock needle set and amimo knit collection 2010.

I didn´t have time to properly photograph them, due to nearly no light at this time of the year.
It is run by a group of wool enthusiastic women, and they specially pick (supposedly the best part of the wool) and they only use mild soap (so no evil chemicals are used), they don´t use any synthetic dyes, and t they handspin the yarn.

I really love the wool, but... there is a big BUT.... the wool smells like a sheep... I know a shock right... wool that comes from a sheep smells like a sheep... So the yarn has just been sitting around at home and I don´t know if I was hoping that the smell would magically disappear. I have however been suffering some allergies since starting work again and I can´t really smell that much now, so I took the opportunity to use the wool now.

The mittens are warm, thick and will be so much better after some wear... Since the yarn I choose were natural colors the white sometimes was gray and the gray sometimes was white... so in some parts of the mittens It looks like I did errors... but I really was very careful and I frogged a lot of times only to find out that I hadn´t made any errors. I wanted them to be perfect since I´m planning to give these away... just hope the person won´t mind the smell... and that they really are not perfect.. you can really tell that they are handmed..

We went to the centrum of Reykjavik today to feed the ducks (well there were a lot of goose, swan and other birds that took most of it though). Feeding the ducks with bread is a rich tradition here in Iceland, not sure it is in the best interest of the birds though, should maybe feed them with something better then bread.

There was of course a typical Icelandic family, in matching wool sweaters (the neon is though a new trend here, came this summer when Istex introduced 3 neon colors in the bulky lopi). So what do you think to neon or not to neon? (*I have no idea who this family is, I just snapped a picture, I hope they don´t mind being on the internet now)

Then after a bookshow in the city hall, we went to Kolaportið (a market place where you can get everything from the goods you get at markets in asia , icelandic food, icelandic candy and handknitted icelandic sweaters).

So if you are looking for a "Lopapeysa" this is one of the places to go, but if you are reader of this blog, you will probably want to make your own version then I would just head to the nearest supermarket and buy some yarn.

But the places to go to shop for Icelandic sweaters is Handprjónasambandið and Álafoss. I would avoid the way to many tourist shops, as you might then be bying something knitted on a machine in Asia , I don´t know anyone who would knit endless supply of the same pattern in black and white, nor would they all be alike if it was knitted by different knitters....
my 3 year old photobombed my attempt to take a picture of a tourist shop window display, but this store seemed to have a mixture of handknitted and machine knitted sweaters, all probably sold as handknitted in Iceland
